700選には文法・語法的に間違いではないにしても、①もっとシンプルに表現できる、②もっと明確に表現できる、③もっとオーソドックスに表現できる、「のに」と思える英文が多数収録されています。今回は、そのような英文をとりあげます。英文ではシンプルで、明確に書くことが求められます。ネイティブに対してもそうですから、ノンネイティブの日本人が小難しい構文を使って英語を表現する必要はまったくありません。今回は、「もっとシンプルに表現できるのになあ」、「もっとわかりやすく表現できるのになあ」とつい感じた英文を直しました。

主語+動詞+名詞(形容詞)

5. It is getting colder and colder during the morning and evening.
朝晩だんだん冷えてきました。

colderを2回続ける必要なし。
➡It is getting colder in the morning and night.

主語+動詞+準動詞など

31. It is against the traffic rule to cross the street while the light is red.
信号が赤の間に横断するのは交通違反です。

be against…と言わなくよいです。
➡It is a traffic violation to cross while the traffic light is red.

35. He always keeps his word and is relied upon by everybody.
彼は必ず約束を守り、誰からも信用されています。

be relied upon by Aは「Aに信用されている」ではなくて「Aに頼られている、信頼されている」という意味になります。
➡He always keeps his word and is trusted by everyone.

主語+be動詞+過去分詞+準動詞など

58. The new school buildings are expected to be completed by spring next year.
新校舎は来春までには完成の予定である。

受動態が2回続くのはちょっとうざいですね。
➡The new school building will be completed by next spring.

59. Punctuality is thought to be a matter of course in Europe and America.
時間を厳守することは、欧米では当然のことと考えられている。

be thought to be a matter of courseなんて表現は実際には使われません。「当然のことと考えられている」はbe taken for grantedと訳しましょう。
➡Punctuality is taken for granted in the West.

60. She was seen to run up the stairs with tears in her eyes.
彼女が目に涙を浮かべて階段をかけ上がるのを見た。

和文は能動態なのになぜ英文は受動態なのでしょうか?
➡I saw her run up the stairs with tears in her eyes.

64. His death was made known to the public.
彼の死が公表された。

➡His death was announced.

69. The bill was passed by a majority, though the Democratic Party were strongly opposed to it.
民主党の猛烈な反対にもかかわらず、その議案は過半数で可決された。

the Democratic Partyは単数なのになぜwasではなくてwereなのでしょうか?
➡The bill was passed by a majority, despite fierce opposition from the Democratic Party.

主語+動詞+目的語+準動詞など

90. You must put up with your new post for the present. I’ll find you a better place one of these days.
こんどの勤め口でしばらく辛抱しなさい。そのうちもっとよい所を見つけてあげます。

「しばらく」はfor the presentではなくfor a while。for the presentは「差し当たって」(at least at this moment, though perhaps not afterwards)という意味です。
➡Be patient with your new post for a while. I’ll find you a better place soon.

92. You must take up a regular occupation.
何か決まった仕事につきなさい。

➡Get a regular job.

104. I would have somebody sweep this room clean.
誰かにこの部屋をきれいにそうじしてもらいたい。

sweepは「掃く」を意味します。掃除には「はたく、拭く 、磨く」もありますが、これらはsweepとは言いません。
➡I want somebody to clean this room.

108. I must get my work done by the day after tomorrow.
明後日までにこの仕事をやってしまわなければならない。

「この仕事」はmy workではなくてthis workです。

125. Low temperatures turn water into ice.
気温が低いと水は氷になる。

➡Water turns into ice when the temperature is low.

127. When he begins to do anything, he devotes himself to it.
彼は何でもやりだすと、それに熱中してしまう。

➡He gets absorbed in anything that he does.

名詞節を含む構文

133. Just when the first human beings will reach Jupiter remains to be seen.
人間が最初に木星に到達するのはいったいいつになるか、まだわかっていない。

➡It remains to be seen when humans will first reach Jupiter.

134. How much we still have to pay for peace is a riddle.
平和をかちとるために、これからどれだの代償を払わねばならないかはまったく見当がつかない。

主語が9ワード、補語が2ワードのような頭でっかちな文章はできるだけ書かないようにしましょう。「平和を勝ち取る」はwin peace, have peace, make peaceのいずれでも良いです。
➡I have no idea what price we will have to pay to win peace.

135. The first great lesson that a young man should learn is that he knows nothing.
青年がまず第一に学ぶべき重要な教訓は、自分は何も知らないということである。

「重要な」はgreatではなくimportantです。

136. The fact is that I don’t know anything about him.
実は、彼のことを私は何も知らないのです。

The fact is thatが冗長的。
➡Actually, I don’t know anything about him.

140.Choose such friends as will benefit you, they say.
ためになるような友人を選べといいます。

「ためになるような友人」はa friend who is helpfulと言おう。

148. You will never know what they went through to educate their children.
彼らは子供の教育にどんなに苦労したことでしょう。

この英文だと「彼らが子どもを教育するためにどんな苦労をしたか、あなたには決してわからないでしょう。」という意味になります。
➡How hard they must have had to educate their children

154. I’m not certain where this ought to be put.
これをどこへ置いたらよいのか、よくわからない 。

➡I’m not certain where to put this.

ItとThereの構文

156. It is only a few months since that Frenchman came to Japan, but he speaks Japanese very well.
あのフランス人は日本に来てわずか数か月ですが、日本語を上手に話します。

なぜ現在完了ではないのか。It is only a few months since…→It has been only a few months since…

157. I believe it will be quite a long time before the spirit of democracy pervades our daily life.
民主主義の精神がわれわれの日常生活の中に浸透するのには相当の年月がかかると思います。

it will take… for A to do ~ 「Aが~するのに(時間)がかかる」の構文で簡単に表現できます。
➡I think it will take a long time for the spirit of democracy to permeate our daily lives.

167. It seems [appears] that it is getting warmer and warmer every year.
毎年だんだん暖かくなってくるように思われる。

warmerは一つで十分。

183. It is because light travels faster than sound that we see lighting before we hear thunder.
雷鳴が聞えるよりも先に稲光が見えるのは、光が音よりも早く伝わるからである。

強調構文を使う必要は特にないです。
➡Lightning is seen before thunder is heard because light travels faster than sound.

192. There were several stars seen in the sky.
空にはいくつも星が見えた。

➡I saw several stars in the sky.

194. There live in this world people of all sorts of colors and manners and customs. 
世界には皮膚の色や風俗習慣を異にする様々な人々が住んでいる。

“There live in this world”と”There live in the world”をググりましたが、700選の例文以外は検索されず、ネイティブはこのような言い方をしないようです。「風俗習慣」はcustomsだけでよいです。
➡The world is inhabited by a variety of people with different skin colors and customs.

倒置・同格・挿入

196. It is not wise, nor in the long run, is it kind, to tax the thrifty for the wasteful.
浪費する人を守るために倹約する人に税金をかけるのは、賢明なことではないし、結局はためにならないのである。

wiseとkindはどちらもit isの補語なのに後者のみ倒置にすることで2回it isを繰り返して冗長的な英文になっています。また、「ためになる」がなぜkindなの?
➡It is not wise to tax savers to protect profligates, and it does not help in the end.

197. Not till then did I realize the danger of the situation.
そのときになってはじめて私は危険な事態に気がついたのである。

➡I did not realize a dangerous situation until then.
➡It was not until then that I realized a dangerous situation.

198. At no time does the plain look so perfect as in early autumn.
初秋のころほど、その平原が美しく見えるときはない。

「美しく見える」はlook perfectではなくてlook beautiful。

200. Only if a foreigner has read much English poetry can he understand Shakespeare. 
外国人は英詩をたくさん読んではじめてシェイクスピアの作品を理解することができる

muchは否定文・疑問文で「たくさんの」の意味で不可算名詞を修飾します。 肯定平叙文でも主語を修飾するときは使いますが、目的語と補語の時は普通はa lot ofを使います。
➡Foreigners can understand Shakespeare’s work only after reading a lot of English poetry.

202. So fast did he run that they couldn’t catch up with him.
彼は非常に速く走ったので、彼らは追いつけなかった。

倒置を使う必要なんてなかろうもん。
➡He ran so fast that they couldn’t catch up with him.

203. Happy is the child who has such a mother.
こういう母親を持っている子供は幸福である。

倒置を使う必要なんてなかろうもん。また、「こういう母親を持っている子供」が誰か特定されていないのでtheを使うのは間違いです。a childに変えてください。

209. What you cannot afford to buy, do without. 
買う余裕がないものは、なしで済ませなさい。

倒置を使う必要なんてなかろうもん。

210. I made known my intentions to my parents.
私は自分の意図を両親に知らせた。

「意図」という意味のintentionは不可算名詞です。
➡I informed my parents of my intention.

227. I found, to my surprise, that she was dead.
驚いたことに彼女は死んでいた。

➡To my surprise, she was dead.

237. At night, I think it probable, he looked up with curiosity to the stars. 
夜になって、彼は好奇心を抱いて星空を見上げたこともあるだろうと思う。

文頭のat nightは文全体にかかると理解されて、「彼は夜に星空を見上げた」ではなく、「私は夜に~と思う」という意味にとられる可能性のある悪文です。
➡I think he would have looked up at the starry sky at night with curiosity.

名詞構文

239から256までが名詞構文の章ですが、名詞構文を使っても表現可能と言っているだけの悪文が散見されます。よい子は主語が目的語/補語よりも長ったらしい頭でっかちの文章を書かないように気をつけましょう。

245. 親が子供を教育することは非常に困難な場合がある。
Education of children by their parents is sometimes very difficult.

➡It can be very difficult for parents to educate their children.

246. 若い者が老人を尊敬するのはきわめて当然なことである。
Respect of [by] the young for the old is quite natural.

➡It is quite natural that young people (should) respect old people.

251. 私は若いころから運動が好きである。
I have been a lover of sports since I was young.

➡I have loved exercise since I was young.

時制

269. It has been raining since the day before yesterday, but it may clear up this afternoon.
一昨日からの雨ですが、午後には晴れるでしょう。

mayは「~かもしれない」という意味です。may→will。

271. 彼が部屋に入るとすぐに、彼女はわっと泣き出した。
Hardly [Scarcely] had he entered the room, when [before] she burst into tears.

この構文を使って文章を書けなくても何も問題はありません。ただしリーディングで困らないように意味は覚えてください。
→As soon as he entered the room, she burst into tears.

272. He has not been employed by the company two months before his linguistic abilities were recognized. 
彼は会社に勤めて2ヶ月もたたないうちに、語学力を認められた。

➡Within two months of working for the company, he was recognized for his language skills.

274. They went home after they had finished the task.
彼らはその仕事を終えて家へ帰った。

時系列が明白なのでafter以下を過去完了にする必要はありません。
➡They finished the work and went home.

287. Three persons were killed and ten were severely or slightly injured in the railway accident.
その鉄道事故で死者3名、重軽傷者10名が出た。

怪我をすればその怪我は重いか軽いかのいずれかになるので「重軽傷者」の「重軽」をいちいち訳する必要性はありません。直訳すると英語が冗長的になるだけです。また数字は9以下の時はアルファベットで、10以上の時は算用数字で書くと良いです。
➡The railway accident left three people dead and 10 people injured.

294. English and mathematics are made much of in senior high schools.
高等学校では英語と数学が重視されている。

make much ofを「~を重視する」という意味で覚えている受験生が多いかもしれませんが、このイディオムは treat a person or thing as though you think A is very important or special (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English) 、つまり「大げさに扱う」もしくは「ちょっとしたことで騒ぎ立てる、もてはやす、ちやほやする」という意味で使われます。例えば、Don’t make much of trivial matters. だと「つまらないことを騒ぎ立てるな」という意味になります。 英辞郎の最初の例文は
My mom always made much of my brother’s every little cough. : 母はいつも、兄がちょっと咳をしただけで、いちいち心配する。
というものです。 「重視する」は無難にemphasizeという動詞を使いましょう。
➡High school emphasizes English and mathematics.
➡English and mathematics are emphasized in high school.

295. If only I knew, I would tell you. The fact is, I have heard nothing about it.
知ってさえいれば、お話しするのですが、実はその件について何も聞いていないのです。

onlyとthe fact isは不必要です。
➡If I knew, I would tell you, but I have not heard anything about it. 

300. If you would give me another chance, I believe I could come up to your expectation. 
もう一度機会を与えてくださるなら、必ずご期待にそえると思います。

➡If you give me another chance, I’m sure I’ll meet your expectations.

305. To hear him speak English, you would take him for an Englishman.
彼が英語を話すのを聞いたら、彼を英国人と思うだろう。

➡If you hear him speak English, you will think he is British.

311. He pretends as though he had had nothing to do with the case. 
彼はその事件に関係がなかったようなふりをしている。

as thoughは仮定法でも直説法でも用いられますが、ここでは仮定法過去完了が使われています。なぜなのでしょうか?
➡He pretends that he had nothing to do with the incident.

320. To see the problem more clearly, let’s look at a different religion, say, Buddhism.
問題をもっと明瞭に捉えるために、別の宗教、たとえば仏教を見てみよう。

「別の宗教」はa different religionではなくanother religion

324. Try as they may, they will never be able to define the word “happiness”.
どんなに試みても、彼らは「幸福」という言葉を定義することはできない。

willだと「~だろう」という意味になります。
➡No matter how hard they try, they cannot define the word “happiness.”

325. Let your occupation be what it may, you will not succeed in it, unless you devote yourself to it. 
どんな職業であろうと、それに専念しなければ成功しない。

Let A be what it mayはWhatever A may beという意味の構文なのだそうです。そんなん知らんがな。
➡You won’t succeed in any occupation unless you devote yourself to it.

助動詞

340. As I have something to talk over with you, I would like to call on you between 2 and 3 tomorrow afternoon.
ご相談したいことがありますので、明日の午後2時から3時の間にお邪魔したいと思います。

➡I would like to visit you tomorrow between 2PM and 3PM because I have something to consult with you.

342. He started just now, so he cannot have gone so far. 
あの人は今出たばかりだから、そんなに遠くまで行っているはずはない。

グーグルで英文を訳したら「彼はちょうど今始まったので、彼はこれまで行ったことはできません。」となりました。「あの人」が女性だとすると
➡That person has just left, so she can’t have gone that far.
となります。

352. One may as well not know a thing at all, as know it but imperfectly.
中途半端に知るよりも、ぜんぜん知らない方がましである。

asの前になぜコンマがついているのでしょうか? may as well ~ as…構文はネイティブでもめったに使わないので、使えるようになる必要はありません(リーディングで出くわすことはあるので意味は覚えましょう)。またネイティブはknow it but imperfectlyという表現をしないと思います。
➡It is better not to know at all than to know halfway.

353. あんな男に金を貸すくらいなら、捨ててしまうがましである。
You might as well throw your money away as lend it to him.

might as well ~ as… (…するのは~するのと同じだ)という構文はめったに使われないので、ノンネイティブの日本人がこの構文を使いこなせるようになる必要性はとくにありません。しかし、himは「あんな男」と訳されるのですか?
➡I would rather throw my money away than lend it to such a man.

360. In order to master a foreign language, you had best go to the country where it is spoken. 
外国語を習得するには、それが使われている国へ行くのが一番よい。

had bestは「~するのが一番良い」という意味でhad better (~する方がよい)を使った例文の次に登場しているのでしょうが、had betterと実質意味の違いはないし、あんまり使われないので特に使えるようになる必要性はありません。また「使われている」はbe spokenではなくbe usedです。
➡The best way to learn a foreign language is to go to the country where it is used.

不定詞

384. I inquired at the school only to find there was no student by the name of Yamada.
その学校に問いあわせたら、山田という生徒はいないことがわかった。

「山田という生徒」はstudent named Yamadaと言おう。

394. This morning I got up at four so as to be in time for the first train.
今朝は一番列車に間に合うように4時に起きました。

「4時に」はat fourではなくat four o’clockもしくはat 4AMと書きましょう。

分詞と動名詞

399. He sent me a letter asking if the book had reached me.
その本が届いたかと彼から問いあわせの手紙がきた。

英文は「彼は私にその本が届いたかどうか尋ねる手紙を送った。」と訳されます。
➡I received a letter from him asking if the book had arrived.

401. The amount of paper produced and consumed by a country is closely related to its cultural standards.
一国で生産され消費される紙の量は、その国の文化水準と密接な関係がある。

cultural standardsは「文化水準」ではなく「文化的基準」という意味になります。「一国で」はby a countryではなくin a countryでしょう。
➡The amount of paper produced and consumed in a country is closely related to its cultural level.

409. Generally speaking, the Japanese are a little too timid in speaking foreign languages. 
概して日本人は外国語を話すのに少し臆病すぎる。

「少し」なのに「すぎる」という日本語がちょっと変です。また、ちゃんとtoo A to do構文を使いましょう(too timid in speaking foreign languages→too timid to speak foreign languages)。

411. Compared with the Chinese, the Japanese are poor linguists.
中国人と比べて、日本人は外国語が不得手である。

compared toとcompared withは同義語ですが、アメリカではcompared toの方が好まれます。むろんcompared with…で問題はありません。
➡Compared to the Japanese are not good at foreign languages.

417. The Milky Way is a vast belt of distant stars, each star a sun like our own. 
天の川は、遠方の星が巨大な帯状に見えるものであって、その一つ一つは、われわれの知る太陽に似たものである。

独立分詞構文です。each star being a sun…のbeingが省略された形だそうですが、文語調の独立分詞構文を使わざるを得ない機会というのは特にないのでこの例文を覚える必要はありません。
➡The Milky Way is composed of distant stars that look like a giant bond, each of which resembles the sun as we know it.

418. I stood still, my whole attention fixed on the movements of her fingers.
私は彼女の指の動きにあらゆる注意を集中してじっと立っていた。

➡I stood still with all my attention focused on her finger movements.

419. She said her prayers, her heart full of love and tenderness.
彼女は、心に愛情とやさしさをこめてお祈りをした。

➡She prayed with love and kindness in her heart.

431. I think there is little probability of his succeeding in the enterprise.
彼がその事業に成功する可能性はほとんどないと思う。

➡I think he is unlikely to succeed in the business.

436. On arriving at the station, I went to see my uncle at his office.
駅へ着くとすぐ、私は事務所に叔父さんを訪ねた。

➡As soon as I arrived a the station, I visited my uncle at his office.

関係詞

440. Can you mention anyone that we know who is as talented as he is?
私たちの知っている人で、彼に劣らず有能な人の名をあげられますか。

関係代名詞が2つ続くと「うざい」ので最初のthatは省略しよう。
➡Can you name anyone we know who is as competent as he is?

451. This is the Internet, by means of which we can keep up with current events all over the world.
これがインターネットというもので、これによってわれわれは世界中の出来事についていけるのです。

「出来事」がcurrent eventsと訳されていますが、「出来事」はcurrent (=happening now)に限りません。
➡This is the Internet, which allows us to keep up with events around the world.

457. They thought him dull, which he was not.
彼らは彼を愚鈍と思ったが、彼はそうではなかった。

➡They thought him stupid, but he wasn’t.

461. True wealth does not consist in what we have, but in what we are.
真の富は財産ではなくて、人柄である。

➡True wealth is not property but character.

464. She will give you what money she has.
彼女は、持っているお金を全部あなたにあげるだろう。

「お金を全部」はall the moneyとわかりやすく表現しましょう。
➡She will give you all the money she has.

467. We are now at the end of March, when the subject of cherry blossoms often come up in our daily conversation. 
3月ももう末になって、桜の話題がよく出る時期になった。

➡March has come to an end, and it is time to talk about cherry blossoms.

470. When you are done with the book, put it back where you found it.
その本を読んだら、もとの所へ置きなさい。

「その本を読んだら」をWhen you are done with the bookと訳す人がいるのですね。
➡After reading the book, put it back where you found it.

482. If I were rich, I would do so. As it is, I can do nothing.
お金があったらそうしたいのです。ところが実はどうすることもできないのです。

「そうしたい」は I would do so. ではなく I want to do so.

副詞節

484. As science makes progress, old ways give place to new.
科学が進歩すると、古い習慣は新しいものに取って代わられる。  

形容詞で終わると不自然なので、ちゃんとnew onesと書きましょう。
➡As science advances, old habits give place to new ones.

485. He always plans a thing out carefully before he does it. 
彼はいつも慎重に計画を練ってから、それを実行に移す。

does it (=do a thing)が「実行に移す」という意味になるの?
➡He always plans carefully before putting it into practice.

487. You must persevere in your effort before you can succeed. 
たゆまず努力をしないと、成功することできない。

➡You can’t succeed without constant effort.

495. I’m thinking of going somewhere for a change of air, since my doctor advised me to. 
医者が勧めるので、どこかへ転地(療養)に出かけようと思っています。

sinceの前のコンマが不要です。
➡I’m thinking of going somewhere for recuperation because my doctor advised me to do that.

499. We should so act that we shall have nothing to regret.
われわれは後悔することがないように行動すべきである。

➡We should act so as not to regret.

503. Important as sugar is to our brain and cellular health, we cannot live upon it. 
砂糖はわれわれの脳および細胞の健全な状態を保つのに重要であるが、それを常食とすることはできない。

➡Sugar is important for keeping our brains and cells healthy, but we cannot live on it.

508. Whatever we may undertake, diligence is important.
何事をするにも勤勉が大切である。

➡Diligence is important in everything you do.

522. Even granted that he was drunk, his conduct cannot be excused.
酔っていたとしても、彼の行為は許せない。

➡Even if he is drunk, his conduct is unforgivable.

524. Be prepared in case it should rain.
雨が降るといけないから、用意をしておきなさい(降らずとも傘の用意)。

Be preparedでは何を用意すべきかわかりません。
➡Have (or Take) an umbrella ready in case it should rain.

526. He resigned on the ground[s] that he was ill.
彼は病気という理由で辞職した。

➡He resigned because of his illness.

527. The burglar wore gloves, with the result that there were no fingerprints found.
泥棒が手袋をはめていたために、指紋は発見できなかった。

➡No fingerprints were found because the thief was wearing gloves.

529. We see things differently according as we are rich or poor.
金持ちか貧乏かによって、ものの見方が違うものだ。

『実践ロイヤル英文法』(p.255)には、according asは英国の改まった文では今も使うが、古臭い言い回しと説明されています。
➡The way you see things depends on whether you are rich or poor.

比較

542. At times, I waited as long as two hours for the bus to come.
時には2時間もバスが来るのを待つことがあった。

➡Sometimes I waited for a bus for two hours.

548. Success is not so much achievement as achieving.
成功とは、達成物ではなくむしろ、達成する行為のことである。

「行為」が英訳されていません。not so much A as B (AよりはむしろB)はよく使われる構文なので原文のままでかまいませんが、not A but A (AではなくてB)の構文の方がはるかによく使われます。
➡Success is not an achievement but rather an act of achievement.

549. He left the room without so much as saying good-by to me.
彼はさよならとも言わずに部屋を出て行った。

to me (私に)の箇所は和文にはありません。
➡He left the room without even saying goodbye.

555. The role of the historian is less to discover and catalog documents than to interpret and explain them.
歴史家の役割は、資料の発見や分類よりも、むしろその解釈と説明にある。

less A than B (BほどAでない)の構文は普通に使われるので原文のままで構いません。catalogは「~を分類する」という意味もありますが、「~の目録を作る」という意味で使われることが多いです。特に特別な理由がない限り、「~を分類する」はclassifyと訳しましょう。
➡The role of historians is not to discover and classify materials but to interpret and explain them.

559. Nations are not to be judged by their size any more than individuals.
国家も個人と同様に、その大きさによって評価すべきものではない。

比較の構文を使う必要はとくにないです。
➡A nation, like an individual, should not be evaluated by its size.

566. No sooner had I entered the room than I noticed the smell not only of tobacco but of gas.
その部屋に入るとすぐに、私はタバコの臭いのほかにガスの臭いがするのに気づいた。

英文を読んでいるときにno sooner ~ than … (~するとすぐに…)という構文を使った文に出会うこともあるでしょうから、意味は覚えましょう。ただしこの構文を覚えていなかったために英語で言いたいことを言えなかったということは起きないので、この構文を使いこなせるようになる必要はとくにありません。
➡As soon as I entered the room, I noticed a smell of gas as well as tobacco.

576. It becomes (the) colder, the higher we climb.
高く登れば登るほど、その分だけ温度が下がる。

➡The higher you climb, the lower the temperature.
➡Temperature decreases as altitude increases.

578. I do not love him the less for his faults.

前置詞

632. He came five minutes behind the appointed time.
彼は約束の時間に5分遅れてやって来た。

「約束の時間を~分遅れて」を~ minutes behind the appointed timeとは言わないでしょう。
➡He came five minutes late for the appointment.

644. As for the scheme I had in my head, it was not a bad one in itself.
私が考えていた計画について言えば、それ自体は悪くはなかった。

➡The plan I had in mind was not bad in itself.

646. Because of [Owing to] the icy streets, we could not drive the car.
通りが凍っていたので、車を走らせることができなかった。

➡I could not drive the car because the street was frozen.

疑問・感嘆

667. What do you say to making a trip with me during the summer vacation?
夏休みに私といっしょに旅行しませんか。

➡Would you like to travel with me during summer vacation?

672. “How do you find your washing machine?” “Not so bad.”
「その洗たく機の使い心地はどうですか」「まあまあです」

findだと「洗濯機はどうやって見つけますか?」という意味に取られそうです。「まあまあです」は
So-so.
Not bad.
Good.
などの訳があります。 それぞれ日本語に訳すると、「まあまあだ」、「悪くないよ」、「いいね」となり、So-soが一番合ってそうですが、日本人の「まあまあ」はアメリカ人にはGoodなので意訳的にGoodと訳してもかまいません。アメリカ人にHow are you today? と挨拶されて、「まあまあだよ」という気分でSo-so. と返事すると、「Goodじゃないって、何かあったのか?」という反応がよくあります。
➡“How is the washing machine?” “Not bad.”

679. What a pity it is that you can’t come!
あなたがおいでになれないとは、まことに残念です。

➡I’m very sorry that you can’t come.
